Wally Marden was every bit a country bumpkin. His family was dirt poor - much of what they ate came from the garden and most of what he wore were hand-me-downs. Never traveling much or seeing what other families had, he was quite happy living the simple life. When you can make a stick and a home-brew jug into something to play with life is not very complicated. But as he grew older, bought an old truck, and married Esther, the girl down the road, life began a curious turn.
Every so often Wally traveled farther from home and his eyes filled with wonder when he saw what was in those huge stores that started to pop up everywhere. There were things in there that he never knew existed, and he just had to have some of that new stuff. His visits to town and to that big new-fangled store became frequent. He had to keep buying more stuff! It wasn't long before cutting down trees didn't bring in the money fast enough to pay for all the new items he just had to have. More stuff!
One day as Wally approached the new store he looked up, saw the sign, and suddenly realized that the store had been created just for him. That same day he sold the pigs, he sold his truck, emptied the mayonnaise jar with their life's savings and headed back to town. And that's when Esther stopped him.
"Wally, you've lost your head" she said and then made sure he had learned his lesson.
But the story doesn't end there. For you see, Wally had a son......a son who was really into comic books. To be continued.......
