Geocache Description:

There are three hides along the high sandstone ridge (hogback) between Alkali Creek TH and the Ft. Meade Road. I’ve named them after three prominent women who played a variety of roles in the early days of the Black Hills.

Starting at the Alkali Creek TH follow the signs for Centennial Trail #89. Hike or bike to the top of the Dakota Hogback Ridge. Once on top enjoy views of I-90, the National Cemetery, Bulldog Gulch, Deadman Mt. and Veteran’s Peak to the west. *As a young wife Alice discovered she had a certain skill at cards; she was a good player and a lucky one. After her first husband died, Alice turned to dealing cards to make a living. In 1890 she moved to Deadwood and took a job dealing cards in a saloon. She had a good head for counting cards, figuring odds and distracting male players with her looks. Her "poker face" or deadpan expression gave her an advantage. Alice's trademark became the cigars she smoked. She also always wore a gun. Alice was widowed three times and died in 1930. She was buried in Sturgis at the St. Aloysius Cemetary.
