Geocache Description:

This is a simple traditional cache and No. 8 in an occasional series.

These byways have come into being through a variety of reasons. Some are easements for drainage etc., others are walkways left in subdivisions while a few are narrow linear creek walks. Older lanes provided access for the ‘night carts’ that collected ‘night soil’ from the houses backing on to the lanes – nice euphemisms! All the byways are easily accessible by foot and some by car, although walking is recommended. Some are quite attractive while others are less appealing. The caches are all on public land. WARNING: You may be observed by Muggles living adjacent to the byways. The adjoining property owner is 'cache aware' but has asked that there be no night caching as the dogs, upset by the security lights, disturb the household. Thank you. Lancelot Avenue Reserve, near the cache, is in Cowan Lane, named after H. A. Cowan, owner of Holly Grange from 1906 to 1956 and member of Burnside Council 1918-1924. Holly Grange still stands on the south side of Cooper Place and is currently for sale at something close to $3M. The row of magnificent River Red gums in the Lancelot Avenue Reserve originally flanked the driveway to Linden, built by Alexander Hay in the 1850s. He also built the grand mansion Mount Brecken at Victor Harbor. Linden was later owned by Peter Wood, of Wood Son & Co., wholesale tea and grocery merchants and was demolished in 1967. The two large Morton Bay fig trees on the south side of Greenhill Road opposite Hazelwood Park stood either side of the gate to Linden and adjacent to Linden Lodge. The lodge still remains at 518 Greenhill Road as ‘an unobtrusive little gem in a row of houses stretching along the frontage of the old Linden estate.’ (See Elizabeth Warburton, The Paddocks Beneath pp.175-184 for photos and further information.) You are looking for a 200 ml Sistema container. To avoid embarrassment, please, retrieve and replace the cache carefully.
