This public park sits on the bank of the Seekonk River. It is located in the Watchemoket (pronounced "watch-uh-mow-cut") Village neighborhood of East Providence, R.I. The name means "place of the big smell" in the Wampanoag Indian language. The smell likely came from shellfishing which historically took place near here.
The park is open year round from dawn to dusk. It has views of Narragansett Bay, the Washington Bridge and Bold Point Park.
Despite what some people think, this park was not named for John L. Lewis the labor leader. It was named for the John L. Lewis of East Providence, who was a longtime aide of U.S. Sen. Claiborne Pell.
If you're hungry, you can either bring a lunch and eat at the picnic table, or dine at the seafood restaurant next door.
FTF goes to 4Swans. Congratulations!
