Geocache Description:

This cache is on the property of Camp McKinley Boy Scout Reservation. This Cache is placed with the assistance of Columbiana Police Explorer Post 27 and is dedicated to the memory of Robert Kenyon “Ranger Bob” who served for many years as the camp ranger and impacted so many young lives. He will not be forgotten.

As you cross over Beaver Creek and enter the camp you will see on your left the remains of the Rebecca Blast Furnace built in 1807 by Gideon Hughes to supply the needs of the settlers heading West. Mr. Hughes also built a stone “mansion” near the furnace, which later became the home of President McKinley’s Grandparents. President McKinley is said to have spent many summers at his grandparent’s home in his youth. The mansion more commonly referred to as the “Stone House” has served as the home for the Camp Ranger and for a few years as the Columbiana Council Boy Scout Office, prior to the merger with Buckeye Council. It still serves as the Rangers residence today.

Nearby you can also still find the remains of several locks complete with the original cut-stone walls a remnant of the Sandy Beaver Canal system of the mid 1800’s. One of the remains sits close to the old blast furnace.

The camp comprises 300 acres and has been owned and operated by the Boy Scouts of America since 1934. This cache is placed with permission of the Camp Ranger and is a short walk from the roadway. Please respect any other activities that may be taking place at the camp, and bear in mind that the camp is private property.

PLEASE NO NIGHTCRAWLING.

We have posted a reproduction of a picture depicting the Rebecca Furnace from ca 1890 in the gallery.
