Geocache Description:

Quick drive-up. Beware of heavy traffic.

An ear into space...

Look to the northeast across the road at the interesting facility tucked back in the hills.

Note: On my maintenance run today (3/2/09) I noticed that the "Ear" is gone. All that is left is the concrete structure that held it. So, all you have is this picture to remind you what was there. I will leave the cache active because it is a good spot for a hide.

I have driven past this spot for years and always wondered what this facility was for. I suspect that it was part of the Manned Spaceflight Tracking Network from the 1960's, but I haven't been able to uncover any references that confirm this. If you look a bit more toward the north you can see a power substation that would indicate a substantial transmiter on the site. If you have any information regarding this place, please share it in the logs (factual as well as imaginary - this should be fun!) BTW, you cannot find this spot on Google Earth - it has been erased. Adds to the mystery!

Traffic at this spot is extremely heavy during commute hours so be careful. There is adequate space to pull a car off on either side of the road but kids should stay in the car. You can come and play golf while you contemplate the site. CHP is sometimes present in the area issuing tickets, so an encounter with the local officers won't be out of the question as you pull off to find this. Beware of the local wildlife.

Please bring your own writing instrument.

Congratulations to geodanimal for FTF!
