Richard John Seddon – or “King Dick” - some would say, the West Coast’s most famous son. Although Seddon was born in England, he is well and truly claimed by the West Coast.
Seddon rose to be Premier/Prime Minister of New Zealand, after a not so auspicious beginning to life, being ‘removed’ from school at the age of 12! Sometime later he became an engineering apprentice, but eventually the call of the gold fields got to him and he sailed for Australia. A little later on he moved to New Zealand, and after a variety of jobs, realised that politics was where his heart ands skills really lay. Seddon’s early political career included a stint as Mayor of Kumara, and it was in his hometown of Kumara that he based his family for the first two years of his ‘Premiership’.
Many more facts and figures about Seddon’s life can be found on an information panel near the given co-ordinates, which should take you close to a spot to park.
The ones you will especially need are:
Seddon came to Kumara to stake a gold claim in 1B76
He was elected the Member of Parliament for Kumara in 188C
His family lived here from the late 18D0’s until 189E
‘King Dick’ was Premier from 189A to 1906
F=C+C
The co-ords for the final are S 42 AB.CFB E 171 CC.DEA
