Geocache Description:

TOCCOPOLA, located just inside the Pontotoc County line is one of the oldest settlements in Pontotoc County. It derives its name from the little stream that borders the village from north to south, Toccopola Creek. The Indian word for the name is , Tokalopulli, "an old crossing place."

The cache is a small magnetic key holder. This location is also a part of the Pontotoc Historic Tour as this site marks the grave of Betty Love Allen. Love was a daughter of Thomas Love of the Chickasaw nation.

" Litigation over a slave given to her by her father and claimed by her husband's creditors in 1829, resulted in the establishment of the rights of women to own property not liable for the debts of husbands. Mississippi Legislature enacted this Chickasaw tribal code into law to become the first government in the world to give women the right to own property outright".

Betsy Allen died in 1837 and was buried in the Indian burying ground at Toccopola, which is now a pasture in the rear of the home of Alex Revill.

The citizens of Toccopola decided in the fall of 1933 to remove the remains from this neglected resting place, and place them on what was then the campus of Toccopola High School and to erect a suitable monument in her memory.
