Geocache Description:

The first stage of this cache is not at the published coordinates. The first stage of this multicache begins at the Northern most garbage can in the Northwest corner of this park. This cache has three stages and will help you utilize features of your GPS that aren't commonly used.

From the start location (garbage can) take a bearing of 177 degrees and pace off 33 feet to the microcache location. Good luck and have fun. The original cache is chock full of really cool and kitschy items.

Welcome to Brookside Park, Durango's first chemical free park! The City of Durango Parks and Recreation teamed up with Turtle Lake Refuge Organic Land Stewards Collective to find solutions to create a safe environment for individuals, families, insects, birds and bats. No chemical fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides are sprayed on the grounds or in the air. Chemical fertilizers can create an inhospitable environment to the microorganisms in the soil including earthworms. The phosphates from the fertilizers can run off into our waterways and risk polluting our rivers.

To become involved you can participate in the educational park maintenance parties. You can also set an example by using organic land practices on your own lawns and gardens. To become involved contact the City of Durango Parks and Recreation Department at 970-375-7300 or Turtle Lake Refuge Organic Lands Stewards Collective at 970-274-8395.

Some ways the park is managed (and you can do at home:

-The grass is mowed once a week and the clippings are mulched back into the grass rather than collected. (alleviates the need for fertilizer)

-Organic, locally made, compost tea is placed on the grass for nutrients

-The weeds are manually dug up in places where they have become too abundant

-Some plants are allowed to coexist with the grass to create a healthy diverse ecosystem while still functioning as a City Park

-Bat boxes have been installed to encourage the bats to keep the mosquito population down.
