Geocache Description:

At first glance, this bridge doesn't appear to be anything special. I discovered it in a search for items in the area that are on the National Register of Historical Places. Up popped the Lake Ditch Bridge near Monrovia Indiana. The bridge is of the "Plate Girder" type. It was originally constructed in 1895, possibly as a railroad bridge, and was moved to Lake Ditch Road in 1926. Current appearance sure makes this look like a new bridge, but maybe the old girders were just given a fresh coat of red paint. The concrete bed certainly looks new.

The NRHP listing says the bridge is rail-related. This gave me concern initially that I was in the right place until I found the following information in a 2002 issue of the newsletter for the Society for Industrial Archeology: Lake Ditch Bridge, Monrovia vicinity. The 61-ft. skewed steel plate-girder bridge (1895) over Lake Ditch is the oldest extant Chicago Bridge & Iron Co. span in the state. The bridge was likely built as a railroad span and later moved to the site ca.1926 where it remains one of the oldest plate-girder bridges in Indiana.
