Geocache Description:

Every time June comes around and I drive through the farm country of the Fraser Valley I am reminded of all those teenage summers that I picked berries. It’s amazing how a job I loathed has left me with so many good memories… the sweet smell of strawberries, lunch time in the shade, great friendships made, sharing the shady side of the raspberry row and buying my first shiny ten speed with every cent of my hard earned money.

This cache series is dedicated to all of you who picked berries like me. I hope it brings back some wonderful memories for you too. When you find the cache make sure to make note of the Jumble Letter(s) located inside the cache. You will need them to solve the puzzle for the Final: I’m Done Picking Berries.

I know what you’re thinking. No one picked HUCKLEBERRIES for money. That’s true, but I had to include them in my series. When I was growing up in Brookswood we lived beside a large area of forest and there were huckleberries growing everywhere in that woods. When the huckleberries were ripe my brother and I would do our best to pick an ice cream bucket full for my mom, which was not an easy task. Once we got a bucket full she would make us some Platz, our favourite Mennonite dessert, with huckleberries. Warm out of the oven, it made your mouth water….and was worth all the effort.

These days, around here, huckleberry bushes are harder to come by. They normally grow on old stumps and rotting logs under the canopy in old coniferous forests and, sadly, those environments are disappearing in the Valley.

To help you find this cache it would be a really good idea to make note of the image of the huckleberry bush on this cache page. If you're caching in the winter maybe you should check what a huckleberry bush looks like in the winter. Also make note of WHERE I said they like to grow. Please replace exactly as you found it. Thanks!
Here’s mom’s recipe for Platz. Maybe you’ll find enough huckleberries around the valley to make it the way I remember, but any other kind of berry (or apple) works just as well.

PLATZ
2 cups flour
½ tsp salt
4 tsp baking powder
4 tbsp sugar
1 egg
6 tbsp milk
4 tbsp butter or shortening
Sift dry ingredients and mix in shortening. Beat egg, add to milk and mix with flour mixture. Roll out on floured surface to fit jelly roll pan, pressing up enough dough to make edge all around pan. Arrange fruit on top of dough in pan. Top with 1 cup sugar, ½ flour and ½ butter mixed together to make a crumble topping. Bake at 375 degrees until fruit is tender and crumbs are golden brown.

*note: to access this cache please park in the Parking Lot at Douglas Taylor park... there is no parking allowed at the end of Olund Road (near the cache site).
