Geocache Description:

Every time June comes around and I drive through the farm country of the Fraser Valley I am reminded of all those teenage summers that I picked berries. It’s amazing how a job I loathed has left me with so many good memories… the sweet smell of strawberries, lunch time in the shade, great friendships made, sharing the shady side of the raspberry row and buying my first shiny ten speed with every cent of my hard earned money.

This cache series is dedicated to all of you who picked berries like me. I hope it brings back some wonderful memories for you too.

When you find the cache make sure to make note of the Jumble Letter(s) located inside the cache. You will need them to solve the puzzle for the Final: I'm Done Picking Berries.

I didn’t ever pick BLACKBERRIES for money but when I was little my parents did. We didn’t have much money in those days and my parents would pick blackberries, at my grandpa’s, to make some extra money in the summer. My grandfather owned a wonderful farm on Mt. Lehman Road (which he actually bought from Mr. Lehman) where blackberries grew in profusion along every fence line. (he hated them….)

The cache is a small green bison tube and is not far from my grandfather’s old place. This park is loaded with blackberries growing everywhere, so if you’re here at the right time (August-ish) bring a bucket. There’s nothing like fresh blackberries. You’ll notice that the cache area isn’t loaded with them, there’s a few here…. I chose this spot for the view. Enjoy! And when you have found the cache and have a bucket of blackberries picked try my recipe for blackberry cobbler…. this, my grandpa would have loved.

BLACKBERRY COBBLER
4 cups fresh blackberries
1 cup sugar
1 tbsp cornstarch
½ tsp lemon juice
1 cup all purpose flour
2 tsp baking powder
½ tsp salt
½ cup milk
¼ cup butter or margarine – melted
1 egg
Heat oven to 375 degrees. Spread blackberries in ungreased 2 quart casserole dish. Reserve 1 tsp of the sugar. Mix remaining sugar, the cornstarch and lemon juice. Drizzle cornstarch mixture over blackberries; stir gently. Mix flour, baking powder and salt in medium bowl. Stir in milk, margarine and egg. Spread batter evenly over blackberries, sealing edge. Sprinkle with reserved sugar. Bake 30-35 minutes or until topping is golden brown.
