Girl in the Garden Traditional Cache
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
The cache is located on a height of land halfway between Meota and neighbouring Metinota, where my parents have had their cabin since the late 1950s. The cache is a small camo’d Lock ‘n’ Lock which originally contained small Canada Day items and a five dollar Tim Horton’s card as the FTF prize. The cache site is in a quiet, drive-up spot away from most muggles but please be respectful of the site. After you have finished caching, walk around the old side and visit some of the early settlers.
The Village of Meota is situated at the southwest end of Jackfish Lake, 34 kilometres (kms) northwest of North Battleford in a fertile park belt extending along the North Saskatchewan River that surrounds Jackfish and Murray Lakes. In ancient times these lakes were joined creating an island near Cochin. Three previous beach lines can be seen along the northwest side of Jackfish Lake.
Situated near the historic Carlton Trail, the early “highway” between Fort Carlton and Fort Pitt, the area was chosen as a settlement site early in Saskatchewan's history.
Once the town site was surveyed, it was only a short time before settlers started moving in. When the first train arrived, there was already an established and thriving village which included a general store and post office.
When the railroad was laid from North Battleford in 1910, the store moved to the present village site as did the post office and the present village was established.
The word Meotate, was shortened by postal officials to Meota; a contraction of Mo-Was-In-Ota, the Cree expression for “good place to camp” or “it is good here”.
Meota was a booming community in those rapidly changing times. It was incorporated on February 1, 1911 and was humming with activity.
The fortune of Meota has also been tied to the resort area it has served. Summer has meant a brisk trade with the cottage owners and several generations have taken part in its history.
Today, Meota’s economy is based on agriculture, petroleum, and tourism. The village and surrounding district have a long and colourful history.
