Michigan Craft Brewing: Meet you at the... Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Ypsi Gizmo: Alas, the fire truck upon which the geocache was hidden was becoming increasingly subject to vandalism, and so the brewery owners have decided to keep it indoors and protected except for during special events. So, this one is done - thanks for all of the fun!

Geocache Description:

This series celebrates Michigan craft brewing. Hides in this series are located near or on the premises of craft beer locations, but none require entering the establishments to make the find.

Craft brews, sometimes called microbrews, are beers made in smaller batches by independent brewers. The state of Michigan updated its brewing license laws in 1993, launching a burgeoning industry of microbreweries, brewpubs, and suppliers of home brewing enthusiasts. As of 2012, there are over 95 microbreweries and brewpubs in the state of Michigan. Most serve some sort of food and non-alcoholic beverages, and many are family-friendly during daytime hours. Dozens of Michigan home brewing clubs meet regularly to share recipes and techniques. Craft beer festivals and competitions are held across the state throughout the year.

malt logo We decided to place the first cache in this series somewhere near and dear to our hearts – at our local haunt! If you’re curious about the fire truck outside, it came from a malt company in Germany. The brewery tips its hat to home brewing and artisanship by allowing local home brewers to brew a different small, experimental batch of beer on a monthly basis. These batches – for reasons unknown to us – are affectionately known collectively as the “Rat Pad.”

NOTES: Please do NOT climb inside or on the fire truck. Make sure to bring your own pen/pencil, as there is not one in the cache.

November 2010 update: There was an interesting article about the fire truck, a 1969 Mercedes-Benz, in the local paper recently. The brewery owners hope to eventually convert it to serve beer at events and festivals.

FTF prize: $5 lottery ticket!
