Geocache Description:

North Carolina Geocachers Organization

Come join us during the weekend of October 17-20, 2008 for our 3nd annual NCGO Fall Fling. You don't want to miss the event of the season, it's sure to be as fun as last year's!

Out of state cachers, new cachers, old hands and even the curious are welcome to attend and we hope you do.

Please post a will attend log to let us know if you can come, how many people will eat dinner and how many adults/kids will be in your group. We need this information to plan for food/drink purchases, activities and perhaps some other things.

We will also celebrate NCGO's 3nd anniversary as an organization. This event is just one way for us to show our appreciation for all the support our members have given throughout this year.

This event will be a great chance for North Carolina geocachers and our neighbors to the north, south and west to spend a little time in a less hectic setting just getting to know each other while enjoying the 4F's of events: Food, Finds, Friends and Fellowship which result in the all important 5th F - FUN!

This year we will be at Falls Lake State Park which is just a few miles north of Raleigh.

The park offers many things including,

  • Campground with tent and RV camping - and showers!
  • Nature, hiking and biking trails
  • Fishing
  • Beautiful Falls lake with kayaking, swimming, and boating
  • and of course, all of you!

We will have the Community Building reserved for Saturday. There is also a nearby picnic shelter but we encourage you to bring your chairs to be sure you have a seat for the meal.

Groups/individuals that want to set up a canopy in the general area are welcome to do so. But don't miss out on the opportunity to mingle with your fellow geocachers from NC and surrounding states at this special event.

Just a reminder for those who are not planning on camping...

Since this is a state park, the gates to the camping and beach areas will be locked at 8 pm. So remember not to get stranded and locked in the park after the event.

For those who are planning on camping, we will have fun activities planned at the camp site to keep you entertained, so be sure not to miss them!

During the month of October, there is no entrance fee to enter the state park area.

Camping

We have reserved two group camping sites in Rolling View Park for both Friday night and Saturday night and these sites are only 500 feet or so from the main event area.

Since we have the group sites for the weekend, those who wish to camp can set up their tents anytime after lunch on Friday and we must have everything taken down and the sites cleaned up by noon on Sunday.

There is RV camping available at the family campground area, which is just south of the group camping area. The rates for RV's will be $20 per night, and will be on a first come first served basis. Once you arrive at the park, you can pay the park staff the appropriate fees. There is water and electrical hookups at these sites.

We have filled the group tent site for the weekend. However, if you would still like to camp, there is camping available in the RV and Family site which is located near the entrance to the park. This site is first come-first serve, and these sites are also $20 and can be paid to the park staff upon arrival.

Carolina Cache 'N Dash!

We have placed a series of caches near the Fall Fling event headquarters along a beautiful hiking trail that offers incredible views of Falls Lake. This is a timed contest and this challenge will consist of a series of regular sized geocaches placed along the trail and several team challenges will be found in each cache. The caches will be regular sized caches, and will all be standard type hides. There will also be several scavenger types items to find throughout the hike that will add points to your score and increase your chance of winning this event.

Along the way it will be necessary to find all the placed caches (which will be activated after the event). Also, there will be a list of "scavenger items" to find to earn "Bonus Points".

You can use the NCGO Cache 'N Dash forum here for more information or to create your team, but once you have a team created please email us at fallfling@ncgeocachers.org with your team name and members so we can add you to the list.

Geo-Olympics!

Since 776BC, people of Olympia gathered to worship the most powerful of Greek gods, Zeus, and organized sports competitions in his honor. Athletes would gather on bright sunny hills, strip their clothes as a mark of equality and compete in such games as pancracium (a mix of boxing and wrestling), pentathlon, boxing and chariot racing.

Well...the most powerful of the Geocaching gods, Garmin, came to the NCGO in a dream and ordained that we....mere caching Mortals... also need to pay homage to our most worthy god or he will strike us down with zealous lightning and, oh! destroy the satellite network.

So, just in time for Fall Fling 2008, we present Geo-Olympics! Come line up during the day at the main event site (from 10am to 2pm) and partake in such amazing events as Roll the Log! Toss the Ammocan!! Save the Flooded Cache!!!

Play for points! Win prizes! Winners will be announced later in the day, probably after we've finished eating lunch.

PS Stripping for equality will be purely optional

Kayaking!

We are having a Kayaking cache run on Sunday morning and we are currently working with a vendor to offer Kayaks and Canoes and they will be delivered to the site that morning. If you would like to participate or are interested in renting a kayak, you can find more information about this on the NCGO forums page here

TB's and Coins

If you bring a travel bug or coin to the event that will be picked up by someone else, please log it in before coming to the event.

If you log your personal bugs/coins, please log them out of the event in a timely fashion.

If you pick up bugs and/or coins, please also log them out of the event in a timely fashion.

Have some consideration for the owners of these travellers who often do not like them to visit events and are always interested in where they go and if they are still being circulated as desired.

Thank you and we hope to see you in October!
