Geocache Description:

It appears that there are only two caches in all of Alleghany County, so we wanted to help out. We’ve found a great spot for a picnic or just to relax, close to the Blue Ridge Parkway. The owners of this winery helped us place the cache and welcome you.

There is some interesting history here as well. The farmhouse was built in 1898 by Dr. Cicero A. Reeves, grandfather of the current owner. Dr. Reeves was one of the first dentists licensed to practice in North Carolina. Around 1906, he built a flywheel and installed it in one of the small creeks that run near the home. He attached batteries to the flywheel and stored the electricity to power his dental drill; he was probably the first dentist in North Carolina to use a powered drill – especially one that got its power from a creek. Patients visited him from all over. The new drill was much less painful than the then-current practice of using a foot pump to power the drill, so his practice was a popular one.

People waiting their turn for Dr. Reeves were fed meals and housed by his wife for a nominal fee, in what amounted to the area’s first bed and breakfast. His dental office was located in an outbuilding in front of the farmhouse; a small wing was built onto the office to house his batteries, which you can see in the photo below. Today, the family welcomes guests to their winery and tasting room, and Dr. Reeves’ great-grandson continues the practice of dentistry and has the restored dental equipment located in his office in Union Grove, NC.

This cache is available sunrise to sunset; absolutely no night caching. Parking is ample and available very close to the cache. Bring your own pen as cache is only big enough for coin-size trading items.

Weddings in season on some Saturdays mean that muggles abound—-happens about once a month. Please respect the wedding party’s privacy.

So grab a bottle of wine, break out the picnic basket and relax in the shade of a hundred year old maple next to a babbling brook—there’s a cache nearby!
