Geocache Description:

A short stroll along the trackbed of the long-abandoned railway that once ran between Stamford and Wansford....

Please park at the following co-ordinates - but please take care to avoid blocking the access gate:
N52° 37.285  W000° 23.948

Your path to the cache takes you along the trackbed of the railway line that once ran from Stamford East station (you can still see the station building in Water Street - now a private residence) through to Wansford - some 8.5 miles.
This stretch of line opened in February 1867 but was never really a viable alternative to the much more direct Midland Railway route to Peterborough and sadly closed to passengers in 1923, and then closed totally on July 1st 1929.

As the photo of the map below shows, there were several stations en route, including Barnack (where the station house still stands today) and the one here at Ufford Bridge.
Although during the summer months it's rather overgrown, you can still see the old station platform on the left hand side after you have walked under the bridge. Nature has been busy reclaiming the area and it appears that a couple of trees have grown right through the platform!

As you would expect from a railway trackbed, the route to the cache is pretty flat and firm, although it can get a bit muddy under the bridge if there has been recent rain - you can usually edge round it anyway - although it might be a bit tight for pushchairs during these times.

The cache itself is of the "decon" type and so will hold small swaps and coins and is hidden only a couple of feet from the footpath, so use your GPS (or the clue!) to locate where to dive in to the trees and it's an easy find from there. The cache actually hangs from a nail, so can finders please make sure it hooks back there and ideally leave it so the label on the container faces the tree (to hide it a little).

Happy hunting and hopefully there will be more "Bygone" caches coming up in the future.
