An ammo can hidden in a rocky overlook. There is a hike of about 1.5 miles most of which is on an established trail, but may involve a half mile of traveling off trail. Altitude climbs to about 8900 feet, and there are some great views from multiple lookout points in the area of the cache location. Terrain is 3.5 - 4
This cache is a bit of a day trip. This is our first cache, so I wanted something I would consider ideal, for an excursion. You will probably want to start your trek at the Headquarters Trail Head parking area off Headquarters Road / NF Road 707. This is best reached from Happy Jack Road/210 and there should be sign at the turnoff directing towards Blair Wallis road.
Taking the trail from the parking lot brings you to the top of the hill after about .8 miles and you'll come to an iron gate in a cow fence. From there you may need to trek .5 miles to the south to reach the cache site. From the satellite imagery it looks like there are a few trails in the area of the cache, but I can't vouch for them.
Please be careful when climbing on the rocks, there are a few drop-offs in the area; however the views are worth it. There are several lookout points within the cache area that are great for photography.
Also, be warned of storms springing up quickly. Lightning does strike regularly at the higher altitudes during our regular summer thunderstorms. This isn't really a "little kid" friendly cache.
