Waipu was founded by a group of Scottish Highlanders who, after disappointment in Nova Scotia & Australia, came to New Zealand in 1853 and settled beside the Waipu River.
Highland games each New Years Day perpetuates the town's concern with things Scottish, as does the Lion of Scotland atop a tall column, the locality's memorial to its founders.
