Geocache Description:

the location of this area is part of the montana historical society. terrain is level ground. the only real difficulty is the turnstyle entry way which may be a problem for wheelchairs.altitude is aproximatly 5800ft.

robbers' roost was a hangout for henry plummer and his gang. they used to hide out there before and after the stagecoaches would run nearby and wait to rob them. the roadhouse was built in 1863 by pete daly on the stage route between virgina city and bannack to provide entertainment for men and women. on ocassion someone's fate would end at the hands of the plummer gang. the main floor was a shrine to gambling and the high stakes card games. the second floor was where the ladies would entertain the gang and anyone else that came looking for a good time.

according to montana history their is a gold cache nearby that has never been found but please don't go digging for it.
a few miles to the south is alder gulch where one of the biggest placer gold discoveries happened in 1863. alder gulch produced over 100million worth of gold by 1920.

virginia city was once the capitol of montana and by 1920 had a population of around 10,000. soon after the gold discovery, montana was made a territory. today you can enjoy many things in virginia city as well as nevada city. there are also many shops that a person can stop and shop as well as some of the remaining buildings from the 1800's heydays. there is also a kids fishing pond nearby for the little ones to catch record size fish.

the cache is a decon container with a log book and 2 pencils. i threw in a coin to send on it's way that i've had for awhile.
enjoy the cache and the history of the madison valley.
please do not disturb anything on the grounds of robbers roost as this is part of the virginia city preservation alliance.
i have received permission from the virginia city preservation alliance to put this cache here. if anybody's questioned what they,re doing explain the game to them and let them know permission was given. they can contact jim jarvis in virginia city commissions.

also thanks to technofunseeker for maintaining this when i can't make it up there.
enjoy the history and the area.
