SMALL VILLAGE IN TUSCANY
Suggestivo borgo medioevale arroccato sullo sprone di un colle, che si affaccia ad est sulla valle del torrente Sterza.Le prime note si trovano su un documento datato 1008, quando il Conte Gherardo vendette metà delle case masserizie possedute in luogo detto Sassa.Nel 1208 passò sotto l'egemonia del Comune di Volterra, e forse fu allora che iniziò anche per questo borgo la lotta fra Comune e vescovo, dando poca considerazione al fatto che l'Imperatore Enrico VI, con suo diploma del 1186 avesse assegnato il castello di Sassa al Vescovo di Volterra.
Oggi il borgo presenta ancora le sue antiche strutture architettoniche, sovrastate da un massiccio torrione che forse costituiva il mastio dell'antica rocca.La Chiesa ampliata alla fine del XVIII sec., si presenta oggi con una doppia abside, mentre la parte più antica consiste nel corpo con l'abside esterno.

It’s a mediaeval village on a hill near the river Sterza. The first document of the village is in 1008, when the Conte Gherardo sold half of the houses in the place called Sassa. In 1208 it passed under the government of Volterra, and the struggle, between the village and the bishop, began: even if Henry VI gave the castle of Sassa to the Bishop of Volterra (1186). Today the village has its ancient architectonic structures: a big tower and the ancient fortress.. The Church was enlarged at the end of the XVIII sec., and it has a double apse, while the external one is more ancient.
