Tring Reservoirs sit at the highest level of the Grand Union Canal and supply water for the canal. The four reservoirs, Wilstone, Tringford, Startops End and Marsworth attract all kinds of wildlife and are recognised as one of the best sites in the region for wintering wildfowl. A National Nature reserve since 1955, the reservoirs were redesignated a Site of Special Scientific Interest in 1987. The reed beds hold breeding warblers and Reed Buntings in the summer. Autumn and spring migration can bring in some exciting birds making Tring Reservoirs worth a visit at any time of year. The area around the reservoirs is also rich in canal heritage with numerous locks and colourful narrow boats.
There are two pubs and a tearoom by the Startops Reservoir car park and other pubs in Marsworth village, Wilstone village and at Bulbourne. They all serve food and can be incorporated into this circular walk using footpaths round the reservoirs and canal towpaths.
This cache is located opposite Heygates Mill, which is a flour mill. Originally it was a windmill. The windmill was demolished in 1910 to make way for a wheat storage silo. The business was taken over by the Heygate family in 1945, and today mills 100,000 tons of wheat a year, resulting in 76,000 tons of flour. As in the days of Tring windmill, only two men operate the system - but in those days they milled half a ton per hour, and now, with a computerised installation, more than 12 tons an hour are produced.
You are looking for a small camo taped tupperware type container. As with all these caches, please use extreme stealth, muggles abound!
