The cache is a plastic container, hidden along a forest path above
the town of Kinosaki Onsen.
The streets of Kinosaki Onsen town are always lively. Everywhere you go you hear the scraping and clopping of wooden geta shoes, as laughing groups of yukata – clad tourists stroll from one famous hot spring bath to another. For centuries people have come to Kinosaki to rest and relax, healing body and soul in the natural onsen baths. But if you grow tired of bathing and eating fresh seafood, you can always explore Taishiyama, the green mountain that cradles the town. Here the bustling and chatter of the town gradually fade away as you find yourself enveloped by greenery, birdsong, and lovely views of the surrounding area.
There are several ways to get to the top of Taishiyama (大師山). My favorite way is to hike up the mountain from Gokurakuji Temple (極楽寺), along the tranquil fern-lined path. You could also hike from Onsenji Temple (温泉寺), a grand complex with history dating back to 738 AD. Either way, it’s about a 40 minute walk to the summit. Or you could take the easy way: ride the ropeway to the top of the mountain and walk down from there. A one-way ticket to the top costs 450 yen, and it runs from 9:00 in the morning to 5:00 in the evening.
At the summit of Taishiyama, you’ll find a wonderful view of Kinosaki, the Maruyama River, and the Sea of Japan. There is also a restaurant and a playground. The cache is hidden east of the summit – follow the path and look for the “Wagou-no-Ki,” (和合の木), the Trees of Harmony. The cache is hidden just off the path, about 120 feet or 40 meters east of the Wagou-no-Ki.
