Geocache Description:

Where once the birdies flew

Very easy access from the parking lot across the street from the Aviary site. You are looking for a small Magnetic Keybox.*

The Beverly Gardens resort (1933-1947) included a restaurant (the Beverly Lodge), small rental cabins, formal gardens, and an octagonal aviary stocked with exotic birds, as well as spider and rhesus monkeys. In 1947 the property was sold and the aviary was moved to its present location where it was operated as "Hanna's Hardware" and rural post office. It was still the only post office in the area when I moved here in 1970, and the hardware store was still in business.

The Aviary before its deconstruction in 2009
*When this cache was placed in 2008, the coordinates pointed to a location directly in front of the building and the clue told you where to look for the cache just a few feet away. In 2009 the cache was vandalized twice so I replaced it with a smaller magnetic keybox hidden about 10 feet farther North from the original location. In December of 2009 the historic building was demolished and a cyclone fence was installed between the two remaining buildings preventing access to the cache. So I moved the cache directly across the street to make the magnetic keybox once again accessible as the entire property is now undergoing the construction of a 3-story, 112 room Holiday Inn Express with underground parking. The foundation of the Aviary could not be saved but the roof and windows are intact and being stored for a future Scotts Valley Museum.
