The cache is located just off the Laurel Creek Trail, which extends into an area previously unavailable to the public. The area features a hardwood forest, crystal clear creek with rapids and a small waterfall, and a hillside covered with mountain laurel. The laurel covered hillside next to the creek gives an impression of being in the mountains, especially in early May when the laurel is normally in full bloom.
At this location, the trail itself is on a farming terrace and additional terraces can be observed both uphill and downhill from the one on which the trail is located. These terraces are believed to date back to the latter part of the 19th century or the early part of the 20th century and represent a typical farming practice of that era. The rocks on the sloped faces of the terraces were placed to stabilize the slopes and reduce erosion. These farming terraces were probably abandoned during the great depression of the 1930's.
Parking is available at at Murphey Candler Elementary School on South Goddard Road. Parking is available any time at the DeKalb Firing Range on North Goddard Road.

This nature preserve, like other Georgia woodlands, has ticks during all but the winter season. Take precautions that include wearing a hat, a long sleeve shirt, and long pants with legs tucked into socks. Wear light colored clothing for ease of spotting ticks, especially deer ticks that are the size of a pin head. Use bug spray with the chemical DEET and especially spray around the ankle area. Additional info for tick prevention measures.
