The altitude at the cache is 8055 ft. My friend verified the location on his GPS within 5 ft. which is about the size of the rock pile it is located in.
The cache is a small clear tupperware container with a blue lid. It contains:
1 pencil
1 small pad of paper
1 Salt Lake City Olympic Skiing Key Chain
1 band-aid
1 book of Matches from the Red Rock Cafe in Salt Lake City, UT
1 page from an Ayn Rand book
I went to Peru to hike the Inca Trail. It was a 4 day hike that ended up at Machu Picchu. Little did we know that when we got there, you could drive up and there were many tourist about. The cache is fairly easy to find.
To find it, you can go any way you want, but this is the way I went.
Once at Machu Picchu, start at the big open market area, the big grassy area, where the local llama's are hanging out. From there head westerly towards the hike up Young Machu Picchu Mt., which by the way you must be insane to climb. Anyway, head towards that hike and you will come to 2 shelters. Between them is a huge rock. Here is where I started.
Go to the right (South) of the huge rock. Between the huge rock and the shelter there is a trail that heads back east. Start walking on it. This trail is the southern most part of Machu Picchu. It is the closes to the river below. Head east on this trail to find the cache. You will come to a section where you can walk back into the building ruins. At this point, you need to face the river and Happy Mountain (if you took the tour you should know where this is) and walk towards them before entering the builing ruins.
You will walk about 12 feet and then you will see a small doorway on your right(east). Walk through here and you will find the cache near by.
The cache is closest to the ravine and river below. It is hidden in a rock pile under some (1 or 2 pieces of) white granite rocks.
It should be easy enough. Good luck and I hope it is still there and I hope you find it.
