Geocache Description:

Cache is located off the Lake Nevin Loop near the Purple Martin colony.

On the north side of Lake Nevin are two Purple Martin nesting sites. Purple Martins are colony nesters and largely dependent on housing provided by people. The nests at Lake Nevin consist mostly of white gourds. They have a specially shaped entrance hole that keeps out Eastern Starlings. The entrance is tunnel like so that owls are unable to reach in. The gourds have a "porch" simply because the Purple Martins like them.
For centuries people have placed hanging gourds to attract the birds. Martins not only eat insects, but are territorial and will chase away other birds, including those that eat crops and gardens and predators.

The cache is hidden in the Maple Grove in a Fingerlobe Japanese Maple tree with a view of the Purple Martin nesting gourds.
