You will find yourself on the brink to find this one.
Not many people know that the NT has many mountains over 1200m,
This is one of them - Brinkley Bluff
Reaching this cache will involve a substantial climb - fortunately, there is a walking track all the way.
The track is called the Larapinta trail and extends from Mt Sonder to the west, a distance of 223kms to Alice Springs in the East - well worth the effort to walk some or all of it
More info on the trail can be found at
(visit link)
Access points are:
2wd - Standley Chasm - plan at least a 10hr return trip,
An entry fee is payable to enter Standley Chasm - which is privately owned and run.
Please note that you don't have to enter Standley chasm to start walking to the Bluff - the trail starts some 500m south of the Chasm area - although Standley Chasm is well worth a look into.
better still - carry water and camping equipment with you and camp on the summit - just as we did
There are several camp spots available near the summit - all offering splendid views and stunning sunsets and sunrises,
4wd - Drive into Birthday waterhole and walk to Stuarts pass and then a VERY steep climb to the summit - again plan a long day.
DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS CACHE IN HOT CONDITIONS - ESPECIALLY BETWEEN OCTOBER AND MARCH - THE HEAT CAN KILL!!!
Always carry plenty of water with you - carry more than you think you will need - You will use it on the climb.
Sunhat, sunscreen, food, sturdy footwear are essential.
Always let someone know where you are going and when your return time is - this is serious country for the unprepared
The Chewings range, of which Brinkley Bluff is a part, were formed by the north south compression of the granite basement, which can be seen to the North, and the softer volcanic and sedimentary layers to the South.
These materials, heated and compressed during a major mountain building period about 1600 million years ago were dramatically buckled and uplifted by earthquakes.
Contrast the low undulating granitic basement to the north with the uplifted waves of quartzite to the south.
Alice Springs based cachers - 2lost souls have kindly volunteered to maintain this cache for us
