Geocache Description:

A persuasive letter to a “paesano” in Italy about the mining areas of Butte, Montana and California and telling them of the work available in this remote little smelting town situated in the mountains of British Columbia alongside the banks of the Columbia River brought the influx of Italian immigrants to Trail.
The first to arrive were (people from the provinces of) Toscani followed by Friulani, Abruzzi, Trevisani and Calabrese and today practically every dialect is represented in this City of Italians which is a perfect example of the multiculturalism within our community. With an ever increasing Italian population plus a language barrier and being in a distant and lonely land there was a necessity to form a Society.
This came about on April 5, 1905 when 32 founding members banded together to form the Cristoforo Colombo Lodge Mutuo Soccorso No. 1, a benevolent society, whose main purpose was to assist its members in cases of sickness or accident and to provide a decent burial for the deceased members.
The Colombo Lodge was and still is the heart of the Italian community in Trail. Without the Society they would have been just another separated ethnic group but they are a unique, united Society with (as of 2005) 550 brothers and 470 members of the Sorelle di Colombo.
The Piazza Colombo is a tranquil little park situated in the heart of the Italian community of Trail alongside the Colombo Lodge. It was constructed by over 50 skilled volunteers who put in more than 7500 man hours of labour constructing the park and feeding the workers.
The grotto in the southwest corner of the Piazza is actually the last remnant of the home of Issaco Georgetti, Trail’s first Italian immigrant.
Come and rest in this attractive little park and think back to the changes that 103 years bring.

The cache is a medium size peanut butter jar with the usual logbook and stuff, some small trade items and a small FTF.
