This is the third cache in a slightly irregular series highlighting some interesting spots around Alexandria, particularly Old Town. In addition to local cachers, I enjoy seeing the logs from all the folks who visit Alexandria from far and wide so please tell me where you're from when you log it.
The West End was once a separate village. It was annexed by Alexandria towards the end of the 19th century. Before that time it was a thriving area for manufacturing and other industry, primarily candle making, smithies and tanning. These businesses needed large plots of land with ample water and access to Duke Street and the Little River Turnpike.
Hoof's Run Bridge, built in 1851, is adjacent to the cache and has an interesting history as well. Heading north or south along the sidewalk will take you to more interpretive plaques.
Important Update 6/3/24: The pace of the work has accelerated. Workers may place screen fences near the hide, blocking the sidewalk access temporarily. Normally this is when work is actively being done down below. Please use your best judgement if access to the cache appears blocked. Returning after normal working hours may be more fruitful. I'll continue to monitor the site for changes.
Update 3/4/22: Due to the Renew construction I've moved the hide to a new spot. The clue and coordinates have been updated. In some ways, the new spot means this is a more challenging hide. I'll monitor the logs and adjust the clue as needed. Message me if you need help.
Congratulations to Birdie Three for being the esteemed First to Find!
