Geocache Description:

A great viewpoint over the Lowther Valley to Haweswater and High Street. Knipescar Common is an extensive limestone edge providing good walking.

Knipescar Common is part of the high land east of the River Lowther, above Bampton. The limestone gives rise to lovely grass and flowers with areas of pavement. The edge ends in a small line of crags. Grand views can be had over the Lowther valley and to the hills around Haweswater.

You can approach the cache from either the A6 to the east, or Bampton Grange to the west. Walking NW along the edge will bring you to the other Knipe Scar cache: On the Edge. Pick a good day for the best views.

A6 Route Option
Park at the waypoint below, which is the A6/Morland road junction, 3km north of Shap. The bridleway is well signed but the first two fields are cereals and the path has not been re-established. You could follow the edge of the fields or follow the line of the path - you are heading for the gate at N54° 33.753 W002° 41.670.

At the gate head through Shapbeck Plantation on a good track, arriving at the first of the smartly painted 'Lowther' gates. Now it's across the large expanse of Out Scar, a continuous meadow for over 1km. Head generally towards the clump of trees on the horizon. Along here you may hear operating noise from the large Shapbeck Quarry to the south.

At the second smart gate the view unfolds and you enter the common, which is access land. The gate is in the corner at N54° 33.679 W002° 42.860, but is quite easy to find. Turn left to visit this cache or right for the other one. This route is very pleasant and involves little ascent and there are gates by the couple of stiles.

FYI: On the second smart gate is a sign with details of a permissive bridleway N across In Scar to Whalemoor, which you could build into a circular wander.

Have a good walk whichever way you go!
