Located along a 1.5 mile loop trail on the Nayfield Preserve managed by the Friends of Hopewell Valley Open Space (FoHVOS). The parking area is located at N 40 22.532’ W 074 50.418. As the name implies, this cache is relatively easy. You can follow a trail to within 40 feet of it.
This cache is at the Nayfield Preserve maintained by Friends of Hopewell Valley Open Space (FoHVOS). As the name implies, both the difficulty and terrain are rated easy. You can follow a well marked, clear trail to within 40 feet of this cache. Some parts of the trail may be muddy in the spring but there is no need to bushwhack. GPS coordinates can be a bit jumpy due to the leaf cover in the forest but the encrypted hint is a clear give away so don’t decrypt it unless you need help.
The cache is a square, clear plastic container and was originally stocked with a nice polished agate slab, a trilobite fossil, a child’s survival kit, coins from Belize, paper money from Brazil and other trinkets.
Once you find the cache please hide it well. You can then back track to the parking area the way you came or continue on the same 1.5 mile loop trail. The trail winds through a beautiful preserve with a variety of habitats including: mature oak-hickory forest, young red maple forest, meadow, remnant redcedar forest and a mature pine plantation. A portion of the trail follows a tributary of Stony Brook and there are several spots to enjoy the view of the brook and have a snack. The preserve is also a bird lover’s paradise due to the diversity of the vegetation.
This preserve is closed about 45 days a year in the late fall and winter to allow hunting to control the deer population and to preserve the native vegetation. Hunting days are clearly posted in the parking area and on the FoHVOS website. Please stay out during these few days a year.
