This is a short hike and then a steep climb for one of the best views (in my opinion) in the lower peninsula.
Congratulations to PROCRASTINATING WOMAN for the FTF!!!
I have great memories of coming to, what was then called, the Bear Mountain area when I was a boy and riding "Little Smokey" and visiting the Fred Bear Museum. Sadly, Bear Archery left Grayling in late 1978, never to return. Little Smokey was sold to the Monroe County Fair in 1980 and still runs today. More information can be found on the Hanson Hills web site listed above.
The hike to the cache takes you along the old railroad grade that "Smokey" used, to a large hill to climb. The view is beautiful and well worth the effort. The cache is a 30 cal ammo box .
Bring your mountain bike and ride the trails or bring your fishing pole and catch some fish. Hike and enjoy the scenery. Plan to spend some time here, as Hanson Hills has a great deal to offer.
Cache is placed with permission.
