Geocache Description:

The cache is an Altoids container. Please bring your own writing stick.

Bitmap and I were out today making a big loop of Mount Woodson.

As we were heading toward “WAHSS UP” from “The Mountain of Moonlit Rocks”, we passed by an area that was burnt from last year wild fire. We commented how quickly the vegetation is coming back, especially the manzanitas. Seeing all the new manzanita shoots coming up, they reminded me of how the phoenix is also reborn after a fiery death.

Since I had a half-empty Altoids container and some papers and Bitmap had a TB that he needed to drop off, I decided to put a new cache here.

If you are interested, Manzanitas belong to the family Ericaceae and the genus Arctostaphylos. There are at least 40 plus species of Manzanitas in California and they can reached as high as twenty feet. Some species can live up to 100 years and are well known for their red bark. Plants from the family Ericaceae live with a symbiotic fungi thus do not disturb the ground below the tree. If you have Manzanitas in your backyard, please don’t water and fertilize them. They are well adapted to the dry southern California weather. Ignore them and they thrive.
