Geocache Description:

The cache is located beside Lough Natullig in the Antrim Plateau.

When Thomas Hardy wrote this novel he used the word "madding" to mean frenzied. The title is very apt for this cache - when you stand beside Lough Natullig you feel as if you are miles away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. However, frenzied it can be. Look around and you might see a peregrine pursuing a pigeon or a merlin mugging a meadow pipit - real life drama may be witnessed even in this remote spot.

Reaching Lough Natullig can be quite a challenge. It nestles in the Garron Plateau (an area within the Antrim Plateau) and is one of the last untouched wild areas in N. Ireland. Travelling to it will take you over a mosaic of raised bogs, blanket bogs and acid grassland dotted with flowers such as bog asphodel and marsh lousewort.

It lies beside a little walked section of the Ulster Way and may be accessed from Carnlough or Glenariff. However, an easier route might be to park your car near Dungonnell Dam (N54deg 59.299;W006deg 08.274)- follow the rough road to the Pump House (N55deg 00. 274; W006deg 05.667) and then walk across open moorland. The cache is a largish tablock box placed inside a blue bag. It contains various items eg small torch and foil blanket that a walker might find useful. There is also a disposable camera - having travelled so far take a photo to prove you made it! When fully used please retrieve and contact me.

IMPORTANT : This cache is located in a wild, remote and almost featureless upland area. The going underfoot is often rough and boggy; and the weather conditions can be extreme. Dress for these conditions - wear hill walking boots and gaiters and carry spare clothes and food/drink in your rucksack. As visibility can be very limited bring a map (OSNI Discoverer Map Series Sheet 9) and compass - and know how to use them.
