Geocache Description:

Gritty warehouse area under intense gentrification. Flat and easy.

Red Hook in Brooklyn has long been associated with an independent, gritty and basic urban lifestyle and mindset.

There is much history here. See (visit link) for a start.

This cache is located in an area of Red Hook still relatively untouched. There are several large warehouses on piers that still have the historic facade in place. Inside of them are various small companies and even modern elevators but from the outside, they look much as they have for over a hundred years.

Seeking this out will provide an opportuity to see a part of New York City not frequented by many tourists. It used to be a bit of an adventure to get there as the subways don't go near there but a new controversial, mega-retail store located about half a mile away has dramatically simplified this by running regular shuttle buses from the subway trains. This same store also provides a free ferry from Manhattan which would be a fun ride with great views. There are also numerous public buses that go there.

The store's shuttles will get you to within about a half mile from the cache.

Red Hook is also a wonderful place for a bike ride and is a photographer's paradise including some of the best and closet Statue of Liberty views in the city.

The piers have a gate that is locked around 11:00 p.m. and are opened again at around 7:00 a.m.

The cache is located in a complteley public area but be circumspect. There are many small art galleries and craftspeople in the warehouses and they have frequent shows and displays of their works. There are plenty of people walking the area at all times but the later it gets the more colorful it can become.

Parking is readily available on the Van Brunt Street right before the above-mentioned gates. There are places to buy supplies for a picnic nearby.

Bring a bike and camera and enjoy a great part of New York City.

Cache is in a small rubbermaid twist top container with a few goodies. First to find can get the WWFMIII May 2008 Flash Mob Event Geocoin. There is a logbook and pencils. There is definately room to add small items.
