Geocache Description:

Welcome to an EarthCache.

EarthCaches are interesting geographical
features. There are no log books, Tupperware or trading
items....just an interesting lesson to be learned. To log this earthcache, read below and answer the questions.

Pebble Beach is known for its pretty and geologically-unique rocks. Located in the
town of Marathon, overlooking Lake Superior, Marathon is on the
north shore located midway between Sault Ste. Marie and Thunder Bay
Ontario. These smooth polished rocks are made from a variety of
types of rocks. These rocks were pushed and gathered there by
glaciers during the Great Ice Age. Geologists who have studied them
know they were carried along by the ice for over 800km from the
North. There at Marathon they were pilled up by the glacier and the
wave and ice action has rolled them together for hundreds of years.
The result is what you see today. Pebble Beach is over two
kilometers long. Each spring the lake modifies the display by
pushing the rocks up into terraces or spreading them in an even
layer, before rearranging the driftwood seating. Over a hundred
years of water waves have left most of the beach's rocks not only
smooth but quite round. It is there round shape that makes them
unique. The size of the rocks and the beach are quite amazing.
Think of the power of the waves to move these heavy stones.

Parking is at the end of Howe Street off Steven's Avenue, then down trail
that is to the left. Use caution as the trail is a bit steep. Wear
sturdy shoes as walking on the cobbles is difficult. As enticing as
they may be, please leave the rocks here for others to enjoy

To log this find you will need a digital camera and a weigh scale (A
fish scale and a small bag work well).

1. Post a picture of you and your gps on the beach weighing the rocks. Estimate how much 3
orange size rocks would weigh BEFORE picking them up!

2. E-mail me the weight in pounds or kilograms of 3 stones. And how close was
your guess?

Can you imagine the power of the waves? Remember take
nothing but pictures and memories.
