Geocache Description:

This is a short two-part multi located along the Port Hope, Lindsay, & Beaverton Railroad. This was the first railway to come into Lindsay. This railway is now part of the Victoria Rail Trail. This multi is a short 1/2 km walk. First stage is a micro with redirect to final. First stage is located at the posted co-ordinates. Please be careful with stage one, and final cache, and replace exactly as found. Depending on the amount of snow it may be winter accesible.

The original 1846 charter of the Peterborough & Port Hope Railway became the 1854 Port Hope, Lindsay & Beaverton Railway (PLH&B) that had an abiding belief in the superiority of the Port Hope harbour, and set its sights on Georgian Bay. Construction reached Reaboro in December 1856, and Cunningham Corners just southeast of Lindsay in August 1857. The first train arrived at the St. Paul and King Streets station on the east side of the Scugog River on October 16, 1857. It continued from its station beside the Scugog to cross it by means of a swing bridge, gained height along what is now the Rivermill condominium property and then curved west across what is now William Street at Orchard Park Road, and from there proceeded west across what is now the Lindsay airport. The name of the PHL&B was changed to the Midland Railway of Canada in 1869, and Port Hope's ambitions were consummated when the railway reached Beaverton in 1871, Orillia in 1873, Waubashene in 1875 and on to Midland in 1879. The old swingbridge across the Scugog River at Lindsay and Colborne Sts. was dismantled in 1887, and the former Midland Railway route across Victoria Jct. and through what is now the Lindsay airport was abandoned when the new direct line from Lindsay out to Midland was built in 1907.
