As I entered the bar in Rio, I couldn’t help but mentally recap my mission here. Some unreliable tips had suggested that Jimmy “The Loser” Blue could be found at the El Barrio Loco, this sleazy drinking hole on the wrong side of the tracks. But I felt confident that this tip was hot. El Barrio Loco is a hot spot for Brazil’s underground poker scene. If there were two things that were certain, it’s that first Jimmy “The Loser” Blue knew how to sniff out of round of poker – and second that he would lose his shirt. Jimmy was a derelict gambler, and about as desperate for that winning rush as any heroin junkie. It’s how he got his nickname – and he was proud of it.

A nod to the bar tender, the handoff of a 1,000 Real note, and I was soon escorted back to a smoky windowless room. The parlor was crammed with felt topped tables attended by dealers and bouncers. Time spent at these tables is often measured by the amount of scruff on a players’ face. By the looks of some of the players, these games could have been going for days. In the back corner, almost hidden by a large stack of chips sat Jimmy, hunched over a hand of cards, and eying his opponent. His opponent, a menacing rogue with greasy hair, an unshaven beard, and about 50 pounds overweight leered back. A local told me his name was just ‘Julio’.

I stepped up to the table and took a seat next to Jimmy. The game was Texas Hold’em – but not the tame version seen on cable channels back in the States. This game involves real money – real stomachs – and real guts. This is a game with winners and losers, not a game where everyone leaves the table with their wallets full.

A local told me that Jimmy had been playing out of his mind for about 3 days straight. He was up about 5 Million Real. But his current opponent brought deep pockets, and a nasty reputation for dousing the hot hand. The hands were hidden, but the flop was played - King of Diamonds – Queen of Hearts - Ten of diamonds.

Julio checked. Jimmy stared through his cards and finally pushed forward a stack of chips. “50,000 Real”, he blurted. Julio called.

The turn card flipped – a four of diamonds. Jimmy stared at the cards. “250,000 Real”, he whispered.

“See and Raise 500,000 Real”, Julio responded. Jimmy smiled. “ALL IN”, he shouted as he pushed all his chips to the middle of the table.

Julio snorted with glee. . “CALL”, he triumphed. Jimmy flipped over his cards – a nine of diamonds and a jack of diamonds – a flush.

Julio again snorted and flipped his cards over, a seven of diamonds AND an ACE of diamonds – a superior flush.

“Well, it looks like your hot streak is done”, triumphed Julio.

“Just a moment, big guy!”, Jimmy retorted. Jimmy looked down at the last unflipped card, pointed to it, gave it a nod and sneered, “. . .I can tell the Queen of Diamonds by the way She shines.”

The dealer flipped the river card. The Queen of Diamonds emerged and Jimmy gave Julio an arrogant smile and started to draw in his winnings.

A split second later a loud pop rang out. Jimmy stopped in his tracks as smoke began to waft from the barrel of a revolver across the table. “I’ll stop a hot hand one way or the other”, Julio mumbled. He flipped a chip to the dealer, arose from his chair, and left the table and the back room. Jimmy fell to the table, knocking over chips, and wheezing his final few breaths of air, as the green felt began to turn crimson.

‘Jimmy, I’m looking for your key to the loot from your heist. Can you help me?”, I stammered in shock.

Jimmy pulled a slip of paper from his pocket, handed it to me and with his last breath, rasped, “Good luck kid. It looks like I’ll miss the reunion tour.” With that he fell over dead – The Loser – even when he won.
