Geocache Description:

The cache is a small metal container containing flora and fauna objects. Stealth required at times. Please replace carefully. Shackle the Cow TB, who has been languishing in my caching bag for too long, is for the FTF.

The SA Urban Forests – Million Trees Program is dedicated to planting three million local native trees and associated understorey species across the Adelaide Metropolitan Area by 2014, and restoring approximately 2,000 hectares of native vegetation, and off-setting carbon emissions.

The environmental benefits include helping to recover and protect our native biodiversity by increasing habitat for native wildlife, reducing greenhouse gases, improving air and water quality, reducing water consumption and enhancing parks.

From Gawler to Sellicks Beach, plantings are being established on suitable areas of public open space including parks, reserves, transport corridors, watercourses, schools, the coastline and council land. The majority of these plantings are within Adelaide's Metropolitan Open Space System (MOSS).

Sites range from large habitat restoration projects to smaller amenity gardens and local biodiversity projects. A walk east from here will give some idea of the magnitude of the works going on in the neighbouring parks.

All 21 metropolitan local councils are willing partners in the project, along with more than 100 schools and several environmental groups including Trees for Life, Greening Australia and Conservation Volunteers Australia, and the State Government’s Youth Conservation Corps.

Last year about 300,000 local native seedlings were planted at more than 100 project sites around Adelaide, ranging from large-scale habitat reconstruction within the reserve system, to local amenity and education projects including streetscapes, schools and local parks.

The GZ is where it started. The goal then (2003) was 1 million trees.
