Gullþúfa - the golden mound Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

Ingabo: Finally I got in contact with one of the land owners. Like I had expected there was a younger generation of new owners who knew nothing about the cache. They found a box on the ground lying fully open and just removed it. I will therefore archive the cache so that no more people make their long way there just to find nothing even if the spot itself is worth the walk.

Geocache Description:

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE CACHE IS NOT ON THE LIGHTHOUSE ISLAND !!
Your task here is to make a gold chest out of this container by donating a coin of whatever value you choose. We made the starting point by adding one swedish krona. Do not trade coins here only add new ones !

This cache is not at the most eastern point of Iceland but you can see this point if you look southwards towards the summit of Gerpir and then look down to the coast line. The point itself is very hard to access even when tide is out.
The cache is placed on the top of a small peninsula with a lovely view over the fjord of Neskaupstadir and the mountains around Dalatangi. You can walk there coming from several directions and if you are lazy you might even take a boat trip from Neskaupstadir to either the ruins of the Stuðlar farm house or to the abandoned, but partly in use, farmhouse of Barðsnes.

It is approx. 4,5 km from there and walking is possible both on the ridge or a bit above sea level on the northern side. There are walking approaches from both Viðvik (why not walk there from the terrific Vöðlavik hut Karlsstaðir ?) and Sandvik where the later will offer a spectacular view down over Sandvik from the ridge of Sandvikurskarð.

Beware of that there are lots of reindeer in the area and if you move calmly you can get very close to them !

This is a still a rather unexploited walking area waiting for becoming discovered - like many other places on the eastern coast still are.

This cache is the first out of three placed (Gullþúfa, Barðsnes and Karlsstaðir) during a walking trip southwards down to Eskifjörður together with a group of friends. It is a 0,4 l snap and lock box with the normal stuff and room for coins from everywhere.

From the cache you will have a great view on the small lighthouse (take care here !!!) which is only possible to reach from the southern shore when tide is out (morning until noon is the best time). The approach to it is steep and wet why the cache was not placed there for not risking life.

If you decide to walk the shore too you will also find trees which have become to stone in the rock wall (seen as black blocks) as well as a fresh water well coming out of the rock wall too ! Lots of birds breed in the area so take care where you put your feet !

To get the cache you will have to take away several stones from the top and mid of the cairn. For your safety the cache is placed on the easy accesible land side.
Please replace all of the stones to protect the cache due to the harsh conditions at a place like this when there is storm and snow !!

The land owner is informed of the placement of the cache.

Good luck in hunting and have a terrific walk !
