This cross does not mark The Battle of Neville's Cross!
The cross is probably Anglo-Saxon and was used as a marker for pilgrims heading in to the west side of Durham before going on to the Cathedral. Only a small portion of the remaining stone called the 'socket' dates back to the earliest times. The cross was moved slightly in 1903, originally standing a little further north than its present position.
The Battle took place further along what is now the A167 on the 17th October 1346 between the English and the Scots. Originally called the Battle of Redhills, the change in name to Neville's Cross came later linking it to this earlier cross.
The cache is a NANO, so you'll need to bring a pen.
Parking is available on nearby streets at a cost of 20p for half an hour Mon-Sat, free all day on a Sunday. Limited free parking is occasionally available across the crossroads.
