Geocache Description:

Located in the Hauser Nature Park in Litchfield, CT. Parking coords are: N41 45.289 W073 10.198. The parking lot can be a little muddy, so you might not want to pull in all the way. Cache placed with permission from the Weantinoge Heritage, Inc.

If the grass is super high, look below at the waypoints for the coords to a trailhead closer to parking!!

Part of the Weantinoge Preserve, This beautiful park was created in the mid-1970's by Gustave and Rita Hauser and was a decisive step to preserve some of Litchfield's highest and most developable land. While the defining character of the park is the hayfield, there is even more woodland, especially with the addition of Mr. & Mrs. George Weston's gift of 36 acres at the northeast corner of the Hauser's gift.

Higher than the village center of Litchfield, the hayfield looks out to the high points of the Litchfield hills including Mohawk Mt. in Cornwall. By virtue of the poorly drained soils, the hayfield usually cant be cut until after mid-July which has been a saving grace to one of Connecticut's last stong populations of bobolink. Bobolinks can be seen here from mid-May through July.

The woodland on the north offers the Ed Eveleth Memorial trail which loops through the headwaters of a brook that has exposed stones that reflect the unique geology buried under most of Litchfield. Milky quartz appears here with the tease of potential gold deposits.

Ed Eveleth was a major influence to keep the lives of busy Litchfield County people healthy and in touch with the natural world. Weantinoge hopes you will feel his energy on this path and use it to look beyond the every day stuff to be, like Ed, a true keeper of this special area.

The cache is a medium lock-n-lock located right on the Eveleth trail. This path is extremely grown in during the summer, and the blazes need to be repainted, but the nice folks at weantinoge have placed yellow tape on some of the trees to help you along. This cache is alot easier to grab in the winter when there is much less growth.
