Geocache Description:

The cache is a camouflaged medium sized "lock type' container full of snakes (harmless toy ones). Container also includes a log and a pen. Take a snake and, if possible, leave a snake or snake related item. Cache is near one of the main park roads

False Cape State park is home to a variety of snakes. One of the more frequently seen snakes in the park is the Cottonmouth Water Moccasin (Agkistrodon piscivorus). The Cottonmouth Water Moccasin is a very venomous pit viper. Adults range in length from 20 inches to 75 inches. The inside of the Cottonmouth Water Moccasin's mouth is snow white and an individual snake might repeatedly open and close its mouth when threatened, thus exposing the light cotton-colored lining of the mouth, It is a semi aquatic snake and usually will be found near water. It is very aggressive and often will stand its ground when threatened or will crawl away slowly from the threat. Non venomous snakes typically flee quickly, often dropping into the nearest water. When threatened, the Water Moccasin will vibrate its tail quickly. Common water snakes do not do this. The cottonmouth is a good climber and it often relaxes in branches over the water.

When searching for caches in False Cape State Park, be sure to look carefully before reaching your hand into places where a cache might be placed (a good idea when searching for caches anywhere). If a Cottonmouth Water Moccasin is encountered, give it a wide berth while moving around it. A good picture of a Cottonmouth Water Moccasin at False Cape State Park was posted by Jasper2K (the FTF)in his 5/15/8 log for cache GC1C8T7 at False Cape State Park.

The closest parking spot for False Cape State Park is at the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center about 3.5 miles from the cache. Parking is also available at Virginia Beach's Little Island Park near the entrance to the wildlife refuge.
