Cap of Coliseum Mountain north of Nordegg, Alberta Elevation 1984m, a 3 hour hike ONE WAY from the staging area 600m vertical below. Bring one litre of water each!
This is our first cache, so we wanted to make it fun...The cache is located on the cap of Coliseum Mountain. Take Shunda Creek Road north off of Highway 11, just a couple hundred meters west of the main Nordegg hamlet access. Travel north on Shunda Creek Road to the Hostel turn off, but stay right...will then see the road up to Mount Baldy, but again stay right. Travel east along Eagle Ridge Drive to the NEW Coliseum Trailhead. This is a brand new trailhead, and most people are still familiar with the old one down by the Old Timers Campground on the east end of Tamarack Trail. The new trailhead shortens the hike at least 20 minutes or so.
The hike to the cache is beautiful in the summer. A 9 and 11 year old accompanied us, but make sure to bring lots of water and a bit of bug spray. Initial hike is switchback in the trees, followed by 20 minutes across a scree slope, then a scenic stretch along a tree covered ridge to the cap.
The cache is about 50 meters from the cap, and a bit hidden from muggles on the peak. The cache is an ammo container with a $10 Subway FTF gift card, and a load of little toys for big and small kids (jeep, curious George lip balm, glow sticks, Canada Day flashing pin and decals, baseball, Nordegg brochure & historical map, and after coming up the scree slope, a help-yourself box of bandaids).
Also brought up our first travel bug - Edisto Sea Forest - a small seahorse from the bottom of the sea...
