Geocache Description:

A regular cache found on Goonhilly Downs

5 Parish boundaries meet at Dry Tree on the edge of Goonhilly Satellite Earth Station and the 3.2 m standing Stone or 'menhir' was probably transported here in the early Bronze Age. It was re-erected in its current location in 1928 and now has 20th century technology as a backdrop in the shape of Goonhilly Earth Station .

To its other side is the area that was RAF Dry Tree. This radar station was constructed by the Royal Air Force at the start of WW2 and with its powerful long range aerials it detected approaching enemy planes and relayed messages to nearby RAF Predannack (now a satellite of RNAS Culdrose & where Mr D flies Gliders with the Air Cadets!) where Bristol Beaufighters equipped with airborne Radar scrambling equipment took to the air. The layout of the station is still visible today. Many of the structures were camouflaged as barrows or boundary banks to blend with the historic character of the landscape.

Parking is available at: N50 02 827 W005 10 347. Please be careful when entering & exiting the parking area as this is a very fast road.

The site lies within The Lizard National Nature Reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest, so as always please treat the area with respect!
