Geocache Description:

A small cylindrical cache hidden on Goonhilly Downs

Aargh!! – Mrs D’s least favourite Trivial Pursuit category!!

The National Nature Reserve at Goonhilly Downs is a Site of Special Scientific Interest that forms a raised plateau in the central western area of the Lizard Peninsula in Cornwall. The downs themselves are an area of sparse heathland, based on serpentinite geology and is home to rare plants, such as the Cornish heather, which has been adopted as the county flower. It is also archaeologically significant for its large concentration of Early Bronze Age (c2500 to 1500 BC) round barrows.

It is famous for being the home of Goonhilly Satellite Earth Station, once the largest in the world with more than 25 communications dishes in use and over 60 in total. The large satellite dishes are an iconic landmark, and can be seen for miles. For a closer look try Cornish Maids GC1DNVJ.

It is to cease satellite operations in 2008 and all dishes, except the largest, Arthur which is Listed, are expected to be removed from the site, changing the skyline of Cornwall for ever!..........(That hasn't happened as yet! Oct 2009 and even February 2012!)

The Downs are now also home to a 5.6MW wind farm consisting of 14, 400 kW wind turbines........That has changed too! 6 bigguns replace the originals now.

Parking is available at: N50 02 544 W005 09 842. Please be careful when entering & exiting the parking area as this is a very fast road.

There are now another 4 caches on this part of the downs, so worth planning a circular walk?

As always in sensitive areas.....please treat them with care!

Please note...from earlier logs.....in or after wet weather, wellies may be handy!
