HAGGIS WAY UP THE CREEK Traditional Cache
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions

This is a good hike from the parking lot at South Star on 38th Ave. S. Follow Joseph Creek Forestry Road to past the powerline. Look for a road leading off to the right at the top of the rise, which becomes a trail as it winds its way upwards towards the site of the fire on Cranbrook Mtn in the middle 90s. It is approximately 9 kms both ways from the parking lot, 6.01 kms as the crow flies.
Alternatively drive S on Hidden Valley Road and take left on Peavine, which becomes Cotton Road. Take left on Prudhomme just after 12 KM sign. Follow this active logging road to just past 26 KM sign. You are less than 1 KM from cache as crow flies. This route should only be used on weekends when there is no logging.
Once you reach the summit of Cranbrook Mtn, which is about 2060 meters high, you will be rewarded with two caches within 250 meters of each other, Chet&Jane's THE DEAD TREE CACHE and HAGGIS WAY UP THE CREEK. Both are on the upper edge of the Joseph Creek watershed. You should be able to spot Phillips Reservoir to the N, which is Cranbrook's main source of water, supplied by Joseph Creek and supplemented by Gold Creek via a pipeline.
There are superb views to the E of the Rockies, dominated by Fisher Peak with Baker Mtn. in the foreground; the Purcells and Moyie Lake to the W; and Cranbrook to the N. On a clear day you can see Mt. Assiniboine more than 100 km to the N.
Unlike recent HAGGIS geocaches, this cache is not lying open but is partly hidden to give some protection from an annual snowfall of 2 meters or more at this elevation. Some prized Haggis memorabilia await those who brave the hike.
Be sure to bring a good supply of water. It also helps to have a good group of friends who enjoy being out for the day. We were accompanied by our Scottish guests, Jen, Brian, Catriona and Colin from Edinburgh, as well as Chet and Jane, our geocaching friends from Cranbrook.
