Geocache Description:

Park near the bridge. A well defined path enters the wood through the hedge. Cross the stream and the search is on.

The Templeton Burn is usually quite tame. This is the Silverwood which leads down to the River Irvine and the road to Crookedholm and Kilmarnock.

The medieval Templar Knights owned these woods at one time. The small Templetonburn estate, originally called 'Silverwood', used to exist until the house burned down shortly before it was due to re-open as a hotel.

'Sylver' was the 17th-century spelling, meaning wooded, so its the 'wooded wood.'

Plenty of Roe deer tracks. The Grey Squirrels are stripping bark off the Sycamores and Beech trees to get at the sugary phloem of the bark - vandals!

I found the 'Stinkhorn' fungus here some years back - it's look and smell are quite unmistakable! Charles Darwin's sister led a campaign to have these fungi exterminated and no, I am not joking.
