Geocache Description:

A micro cache in New Hampshire's White Mountains.

The White Mountains of New Hampshire is home to some of the most beautiful scenery in the country. From the cache location you will have a resplendent view of mountains and the Pemigewasset River. Nearby are popular fishing holes and areas in which to kayak. According to "Place Names of the White Mountains" by Robert and Mary Julyan, the Pemigewasset River takes its name from the Abenaki Indian word "pamijowasik", meaning "swift, extended current" or "rapids". It is also affectionately called "the Pemi" by locals and hikers. This is a micro cache, so BYOP. No room for TB's or coins unless they are quite small. Be sure to replace the cache as you find it.

A few words about The Bridge Over the River Pemi:

This bridge is otherwise known by locals as the “Green Bridge” on NH175 crossing the Pemigewasset River.  It is of metal construction, built in 1939.  It is 183 ft. long and 31 ft wide.  Unfortunately, over the years, the bridge has fallen into disrepair and has been on New Hampshire’s “Red List” of bridges since 2014.  This is a list of state owned bridges requiring inspection due to poor conditions.  These structures are inspected twice yearly.  This bridge has required more than $250,000 worth of repairs for structural reinforcement over the last ten years.  Despite these patchwork repairs, the bridge’s Deck and Superstructure are rated “Poor” and its weight limit has been reduced from 40 tons to 20 tons.  This has significance as the bridge is critical for the timely and efficient travel of emergency vehicles, school buses, propane and lumber trucks as well as for sand and gravel.  215 New Hampshire bridges are deemed “structurally unsafe”

On November 16, 2021, this bridge was the backdrop for a visit by the President of the United States.

President Biden spoke within a few feet of this cache.

It was here that President Biden made his first stop on a tour highlighting a roughly $1 trillion infrastructure package that provides badly needed investment in the nation’s transportation, broadband and water systems.  This bridge was sited as a prime example of where some of that support is needed.  New Hampshire is estimated to receive $1.1 billion for federal-aid highways and $225 million for bridges.
